Hello!

Welcome to Elsie Magazine's blog.

Elsie is a new creative magazine, it's the work of one person...his name is Les Jones (that would be me).

Elsie is a sumptuous, full colour treat-orama of all things photographic, typographic and designographic (is that a word?). Issue no.1 is now available (hooray!) from www.elsiemagazine.com. There are just 1000 copies, each with it's own customised cover and a handwritten message on the inside. And, if that's not enough excitement...one copy in each 25 contains a special golden envelope with a unique arty treat inside...drool on. Elsie costs just £10.00 + P&P

In this blog I'll be featuring extra stuff that didn't make it into the printed version, along with new work, events and forthcoming projects. Elsie is interactive, so get stuck in and get involved and send me your thoughts.

This is Steve, he's a friend and colleague who occasionally wipes the floor with me at squash. He has a copy of Elsie Magazine. He saw the article on Pete's collection of tax discs and he said to me, 'I've got a collection of stuff from when I was kid.' 'What kind of stuff' I said, intrigued. 'Origami', he said. How could I resist...

 

London Walk #2

So, after my chat with Keith, onwards I walked, happily snapping whatever caught my eye. You'll notice a few little themes emerging, hopefully. Things to explore in a little more detail in the weeks and months to come. Here's a mixed selection of the results...

London Walk #1

I was down in London for a night a couple of weeks ago and with a bit of time to spare I took my camera for a walk. The first person I met was Keith, a homeless guy who was on the street trying to pull enough money together to get him through the day. Keith was doing some drawing in a book he'd recently been given as a gift. I thought his drawings were great - naive, but full of feeling. Here they are, with a couple of pics of Keith himself.

 

Staffordshire Marketing Academy

I was the keynote speaker at the Staffordshire Marketing Academy's latest event in Stoke-on-trent last week. Whilst there, I set up a temporary photo booth and asked delegates to pop in and pose for a few pics. Here are a few of the results.

Elsie Live

I'm really pleased to let you know that I'll be speaking about Elsie Magazine at a couple of forthcoming events. On the 28th October I've been invited to be the keynote speaker (very posh!) at an event organised by the Staffordshire Marketing Academy. The event is an all morning event with five other speakers talking about creative approaches to marketing for small businesses. And...on the 3rd November, I'll be joining speakers from other independent magazines at the latest Printout Event at the Book Club in Clerkenwell, London. I attended the last event which was packed with magazine lovers and was a really enjoyable evening with a great buzz.

A friend of mine wasn't too bothered when this package addressed to his partner dropped onto his doormat...

...it was only when he turned it over that he began to wonder just exactly what she had been ordering!

 

Elsie in Magma

I'm really pleased to say that Magma, the UK's leading independent store for creative books and magazines is now stocking Elsie. I've shopped in Magma many times, so it's quite a thrill to see Elsie on their shelves. Pop along and buy a copy - they have stores in Covent Garden, Clerkenwell (London) and in Manchester. 

Some More Summer Fairs

I love a Summer Fair...all life is there...in the middle of a field. It was the local Fair yesterday - so I popped along with my camera for an hour or two. 

Linda's Bookmarks

Since I featured my old mate Pete Bragg with his collection of Tax Discs in Elsie 1 - other friends have ventured forth with their own secret collections. Linda Pugh is one of them - she has a collection of...bookmarks. She has over 200, most dating back to when she started collecting in the late 1970s.
Like many collectors, Linda's fell into collecting by accident, then family and friends found out and started bringing back bookmarks for her whenever they went away.
